City Commission Meeting Update - June 25, 2024

On Tuesday, June 25th the Liberal City Commission addressed the following items during their regularly scheduled meeting:

Consent Agenda items (airport leases) were approved by the Commission.

Commissioners received an informational update from staff regarding Liberal’s floodplain mapping project. Pending FEMA approval, a Letter of Map Revision would allow the publication of an updated floodplains map for planning and land development purposes.    

Commissioners voted to award a project bid to Diamond Roofing in the amount of $173,000 to replace the gym roof at the Liberal Recreation Center. This work will begin in August to reduce the schedule impact on activities hosted inside the center’s gym.

The Commission voted to approve a project bid for infrastructure development for the Ortuno Addition project to O.C. Quality Custom Homes, LLC. The project work consists of roadway, sewer, water, and drainage infrastructure installation for the new housing development located in South Liberal. Commissioner Warren abstained from the vote on this item.  

The Commission voted to approve an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration for a reimbursement grant to purchase equipment to meet new FAA requirements for firefighting systems. This grant funds the entirety of the project up to $30,000.

Commissioners approved a request to submit a Federal Funds Exchange reimbursement request to the Kansas Department of Transportation for expenses incurred for the street crack seal and chip seal maintenance project to be performed in 2024.

The Commission voted to approve the purchase of a mower replacement from Keating Tractor and Equipment to be used by the wastewater department. Vice-mayor Parsons abstained from the vote on this item.

Commissioners also reviewed and approved the appointment of Ruben Cano to the Liberal Memorial Library Board for a four-year term commencing June 2024.

The next regularly scheduled Liberal City Commission meeting will take place July 9th at 5:30 p.m.
