City of Liberal awarded public mural grant

City News Posted on July 25, 2024

The City of Liberal is one of 11 communities across Kansas to be awarded the Kansas Arts Commission’s “Public Art and Mural” grant for 2024.

Grant funds received will be used to support a community mural created at Light Park. Under this grant, both the content and final design of the mural will be selected by the community through two rounds of public surveys.

“This mural is intended to be a visual reflection of our city’s culture,” Chief Communications Officer, Keeley Moree said. “Our residents will have the ability to provide theme ideas and vote on scenes that will be painted into the name ‘Liberal.’ We will then work with a local artist, Karem Gallo, to create final concept options for the public to vote on. This highly visible mural will bring even more color and life to a shared community space.”

Activities for this mural grant are expected to begin by the Fall. Information about the mural process will be provided through the City of Liberal website, social media platforms, and public presentations.

“A lot of citizens have expressed interest in community murals to create more visual appeal in our city,” Moree added. “This project meets that need while also providing an opportunity to express our community identity.”
