City Commission Meeting Update - September 24, 2024

On Tuesday, September 24th the Liberal City Commission addressed the following items during their regularly scheduled meeting:

The meeting began with a proclamation designating October 6-12, 2024 as Fire Prevention Week in Liberal.

Consent Agenda items (airport leases) were approved by the Commission.

A public hearing was opened regarding the creation of a Rural Housing Incentive District for Larry and Hickory Streets in Southeast Liberal. Following the hearing, the commission voted to approve Ordinance No. 4619 for residential housing development on Larry and Hickory Streets. The project is expected to bring 66 new single-family homes to Liberal.

A public hearing was opened for the City’s 2025 budget. The budget presents a mill levy dollar amount of $6,932,800. The budget is below the revenue neutral rate and presents an estimated 3.8 mill property tax decrease from the 2024 budget. Following the budget hearing, the Commission voted 4-0 (Commissioner Vazquez absent) to adopt Resolution No. 2421 approving the 2025 budget presented by staff.

Commissioners also approved two new board appointments. Caroline Johnson was appointed to a four-year term on the Liberal Housing Authority Board. Kathleen Alonso was appointed to an unexpired term on the Liberal Memorial Library board through July 2025.

The next regularly scheduled Liberal City Commission meeting will take place October 8th at 5:30 p.m.
