Geo-Caching:
A new addition to the activities at the Arkalon Park include the locations of 30-plus cache treasures hidden by local geo-caching enthusiasts. This new 21st century 'scavenger hunt' uses a hand-held geographic position satellite receiver (GPS) to locate the hidden treasures. Geo-caching enthusiasts hide their caches and note the coordinates of it by listing the latitude and longitude of the location with their GPS on the Internet.

The Samson Bridge was erected in 1939, by the railroads to cross the Cimarron River. It was built three miles east of Arkalon as a potential railroad crossing. When the original railroad crossing at Arkalon was flooded, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska railway diverted the railroad track to the Samson Bridge.
The Bridge helped speed the commerce of the Southwest to its destination. Called the Samson of the Cimarron, the Mighty Samson is 1,268 feet long and was considered an engineering marvel of the day. It is located 13 miles northeast of Liberal, off of Highway 54.
Birders may have read the excellent article on birding at the Cimarron National Grasslands in Southwest Kansas in the June, 2002 issue of "Birder's World." Those taking advantage of that opportunity can come over to the Liberal area and enjoy more great birding.
alt
In addition to Arkalon Wildlife Area, Meade Lake State Park, approximately 40 miles northeast on Highway 54, and Optima Dam, a few miles south of Hardesty in the Oklahoma panhandle, are all excellent sites for this pastime. All three areas have campgrounds and facilities. Also, just east of Liberal on Tucker Road there are several bodies of water where many migrant birds can be seen.
