Duties & Responsibilities
The Evidence Section is responsible for ensuring the proper handling of all property/evidence that is brought into the custody of the Police Department for court presentation or until it can be returned to the owner or legally destroyed. The technicians safeguard all property in accordance with state laws.
Location and Hours of Operation
The Evidence section is located at 301 N. Washington. Evidence Technicians are available Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. It is closed on all holidays and weekends.
Services Provided
- Relieving, processing, and storing of property and evidence
- Identification and return of evidence and property to rightful owners
- Provide access to evidence for Officers and Detectives for review for criminal trials
- Return found property to rightful owners
- maintain records for vehicles that are impounded by Liberal Police Department
- Send notifications to owners of property eligible for release
Procedures for claiming your property
If your property was taken as evidence in a case, the Evidence section cannot release any property without release paperwork from the officer assigned to the case or the court with jurisdiction. To begin the process for return of property call the Evidence section at (620) 626-0161 or stop by at 301 N. Washington.
Valid photo identification ( any government-issued driver's license, state-issued identification card, military ID, passport, etc.) is required when you retrieve your property. NO property will be released without proper identification!
Procedures for claiming your vehicle
You will need to have a current registration, insurance, and valid photo identification to claim your vehicle. If you are picking up a vehicle that is registered in someone's name other than yourself, you will need to bring valid photo identification along with a notarized letter from the owner giving you permission to pick up the vehicle plus the current registration.
Note: A notary is not available at at the Liberal Police Department (including Property & Evidence)
