City News Posted on October 24, 2024

On Tuesday, October 22nd the Liberal City Commission addressed the following items during their regularly scheduled meeting:

Commissioners reviewed and approved a 2024 audit contract with Hay-Rice & Associates

The Commission voted to approve Resolution No. 2422 authorizing submission of a Heritage Trust Fund grant from the Kansas Historical Society to assist with repair and renovation of the Old Rock Island Depot property.

Commissioners voted to approve the purchase of eight Motorola APX 6000 radios for the Liberal Police Department.

The Commission discussed the process of recruitment for a City Manager. Search proposals from the League of Kansas Municipalities and SGR were presented. Following discussion, the Commission took no further action to allow more time to review both proposals.

Commissioners also voted 3-2 to approve a separation agreement between the City of Liberal and former City Manager, Rusty Varnado. Mayor Lara, Vice-Mayor Parsons, and Commissioner Warren voted to approve the separation agreement, while Commissioner Landry and Commissioner Vazquez voted against the agreement. Mayor Jose Lara issued the following statement following the vote: “Rusty Varnado and the city have reached a mutually beneficial separation agreement. It is unfortunate that we had to end our relationship with Mr. Varnado but both parties agreed that it was time for a change. Without his transformational leadership we would not have the bright future that lies ahead. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The next regularly scheduled Liberal City Commission meeting will take place November 12th at 5:30 p.m.
