City Commission Meeting Update - January 20, 2026

On Tuesday, January 20th, 2026 the Liberal City Commission addressed the following items:

The meeting opened with newly reelected Commissioners taking their oath of office, which was followed by the annual reorganization of the Commission. Jeff Parsons was voted to serve as Mayor and Janeth Vazquez was selected to serve as Vice-Mayor.

Consent Agenda items (2026 Southwest Kansas Coalition Legislative Agenda, airport leases, cereal malt beverage applications, and code enforcement reports) were approved by the Commission.

The Commission voted to approve the High Plains Daily Leader & Times to be the newspaper of record for official publications. Commissioners also voted to approve the designation of Sunflower Bank as the City’s official depository of funds.

The Commission voted to approve the 2026 Fiscal Year Finance Policies & Procedures Manual with updates to the financial calendar dates, outlines for grant-funded projects, debt issuance and management index information, and an operating reserves index section with target benchmarks.

The Commission also voted to approve changes to the Employee Policy Manual, which included language stipulating employees do not accrue vacation or sick leave accruals while out on leave of absence and a reduction in reimbursement amounts for safety gear from $200 to $150.

The next regularly scheduled Liberal City Commission meeting will take place January 27th, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.
