Fire Prevention Inspections

Required Permits & Fees

  • Open Burning - $0
  • Fire Sprinkler Install - $100

Permits and license applications can be applied for online or in person through our Building Department, located at City Hall - 324 N. Kansas Ave.

Request an Inspection

Inspections may be scheduled by contacting Deputy Chief / Fire Marshal, Cody Regier, at (620) 626-0129. Please allow at least 24 hours advance notice for your requested inspection date and time. 

The following information should be provided when calling, or should be presented at the inspection site:

  • Permit number (when applicable)
  • Site name and address
  • Contact name and phone number
  • Type of inspection being requested

There must be a representative of the company or home residence present during the inspection.

If the project has stamped and approved plans, those plans must be on the job site for reference.

If requesting a final inspection for occupancy, the project must be as close to completed as possible.


Inspection Checklists

The below checklists provide information on common fire code violations that are found during inspections (this is not an exhaustive checklist).

General Housekeeping Items

  • combustible items stored in mechanical rooms or electrical equipment rooms
  • combustible items stored in exits
  • combustible materials stored to close to the ceiling (items should be 2 feet below the ceiling or 18 inches below sprinkler heads)
  • storage within 3 feet of electrical panels or heat producing equipment
  • storage prohibiting access to fire protection equipment (sprinkler risers or fire alarm panels)

Exits

  • exits and exit corridors containing obstructions 
  • exit doors being locked while building is occupied
  • exit signs and emergency lighting not in working order
  • dead bolts on marked exit doors

Fire Protection Equipment

  • no fire extinguisher present in building or incorrect size (minimum rating of 2A-10BC required)
  • fire Protection equipment that has not been serviced/inspected annually (fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, kitchen hoods, fire alarms)
  • incorrectly installed or missing filters in kitchen hood systems
  • kitchen hood systems not cleaned regularly 
  • fire protection equipment not in working order or turned off

Electrical Items

  • extension cords being used for permanent power
  • multiple cords or power strips tied together (daisy chained)
  • missing covers (outlets, switches & breaker panels)
  • extension cords being ran through walls or ceiling tiles (the entire cord must be viewable)
  • appliances not being plugged directly into wall outlets
